Hunger Action Month: Turning Awareness into Action

September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide movement dedicated to raising awareness about food insecurity and inspiring action in communities across the country.

At a time when uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits and access to fresh, nutritious food continues to impact families, Hunger Action Month serves as an important reminder that hunger remains a reality for many in our community. In Fairfax County alone, more than 105,000 neighbors experience food insecurity.

Together, our community of donors, volunteers, and staff are helping meet that need. Through our various Neighborhood Sites, Mobile Site distributions, Community Partner distributions, and partnerships with 47 local schools, we support more than 3,000 households and 3,900 students each week on average.

The need is great, but so is the effort and dedication of our community. Every volunteer shift, food donation, and dollar helps move us closer to a more food-secure future. Our supporters step up when it matters most, showing that change happens when our community comes together.

How Can I Give Back?

Giving back while managing a busy schedule this Fall can be challenging. That’s why we’ve created a list of ways to give back in 3-2-1:

3 Hours as a Volunteer

Volunteers are the heart of our mission and create an impact in every part of Food for Others. If you have a free weekday this September, join us in our warehouse, My Market, or in P3! Our volunteer program has a wide range of activities working with the food we distribute or sharing resources face-to-face with our neighbors. Whether you’re able to give a few hours, join us regularly, or volunteer as part of a group, your time makes a meaningful difference for neighbors facing food insecurity.

2 Types of Donations

Every donation helps provide nutritious food to local families and it’s easy to do! If you’re hosting an event this month, encourage families and friends to bring cans of donations and bring them over once they’ve been collected. Or, if you’re short on time but still want to contribute to our mission, check out our Donate NOW page to donate online and help our programs grow. Whether you’re contributing fresh produce, perishable items, or making a financial gift, your generosity helps expand our impact.

1 Community to Share Awareness With

We’re incredibly lucky to have such a tight-knit community to help us, and one of the best ways to expand our community is by sharing your knowledge of food banks or food insecurity and spreading the word! For a faster way to get involved, share our Facebook or Instagram posts with your friends and create your own team of Hunger Action Heros. By sharing information about hunger in our region, you help raise awareness, reduce stigma, and connect more people to ways they can support our mission.

This Hunger Action Month, we’re looking forward to working together to ensure every neighbor has access to the food they need to thrive. We’re incredibly grateful for your support and look forward to creating meaningful impact together this September.
