Frequently Asked Questions:

At Food for Others, we strive to make volunteering as welcoming and inclusive as possible. We encourage everyone to participate and contribute to our mission of providing food to neighbors in need. Click below to find answers to frequently asked questions.

Where and how do I check-in for a volunteer shift?

Your check-in location depends on the location of your volunteer opportunity. If your shift is on-site, please refer to these locations and a staff member should be present to greet and assist you when you arrive.

2940 Prosperity Avenue – Volunteer entrance

2942 Prosperity Avenue – My Market food pantry for clients

2938 Prosperity Avenue – Internal office space

Each time you volunteer, you must check in and check out using our computer kiosks. You can sign in using the email address or phone number associated with your volunteer account. This ensures your volunteer hours are recorded accurately.

What are the volunteer requirements?

Please note the following requirements for all volunteers:

  • Closed-toe shoes are required.
  • Volunteers under age 16 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or supervisor age 18 or older.

Volunteers who arrive without proper footwear or supervision may be asked to leave the shift.

How can I get started on the day of my volunteer shift?

Whether it’s your first time volunteering or you are trying a new role, be sure to check the title and time of your scheduled shift in ensure the correct location of your volunteer opportunity. Once you’ve arrived, please wait for staff direction before beginning work.

Once contacted by a staff member, they will:

  • Direct you to your shift location
  • Introduce you to the volunteers and staff working with you
  • Provide a brief orientation to your task

We’re happy to help you get settled and answer any questions before you begin.

If I’m a first-time volunteer, what would be the best role to start off with?

We recommend that new volunteers begin in our Main Warehouse! Our warehouse workflow is lower-impact, more routine, and allow for ample space. This is a great place to build confidence, learn the flow of our operations, and understand how we serve our community before jumping into My Market roles.

What kind of guidelines are there for supervisors of a youth volunteer?

Parents, aides, and supervisors are always welcome to accompany volunteers and do not need a volunteer slot. Please discuss any supervisory requirements beforehand, as Food for Others is not able to provide direct supervision for volunteers with high support needs. Our My Market space, in particular, is not conducive to supervisory relationships.

To learn more about expectations and responsibilities, please review the Guidelines for Supervisors page.

How does FFO’s volunteer program work community partners and job coaches?

We highly value our partnerships with job coaches and skills-assessment programs. If you are coordinating a volunteer for evaluation or training, please contact the Volunteer Services team first.

Due to space limitations and the fast-paced nature of our My Market operation, we would not recommend this area for job coaching or for new volunteers who require additional support and/or accommodations. We encourage building skills first in the Main Warehouse or P3 Packing before transitioning to My Market.

What is the policy on attendance and communication?

Attendance and communication are essential for everyone to have a positive and meaningful volunteer experience. All volunteers are expected to:

  • Arrive on time for scheduled shifts
  • Communicate promptly if scheduling challenges arise
  • Contact the Volunteer Services Team proactively if they need assistance finding shifts or meeting requirements

We are happy to work with volunteers who communicate proactively about scheduling needs or challenges.

Volunteers who repeatedly no-show or cancel without adequate notice, particularly without prior engagement, may be removed from the program without additional follow-up. Once a volunteer is no longer permitted to participate with Food for Others, exceptions or reinstatement are not available.

Are volunteer hours transferable?

Volunteer hours are non-transferable: Hours are credited only to the individual who completes the shift. Each volunteer must have their own account and log their own time to receive credit.

If I receive food from FFO, can I become a volunteer?

We’re grateful that many people who receive food want to give back to the community. At Food for Others, your well-being comes first, and you do not need to volunteer in order to receive support. If you would like to volunteer, you must wait at least three months after receiving services before becoming eligible.

How can I make an even greater impact in my volunteer position?

Bilingual volunteers, box truck drivers, and off-site helpers are in high demand! Let us know your unique skillset to discuss other opportunities.

What is the drug and alcohol policy?

It is strictly prohibited to consume, possess, or be under the influence of alcohol or drugs—including prescription medications that impair judgment, coordination, or cognitive function—while engaged in volunteer activities or present at any of Food for Others’ facilities or affiliated service sites.

Volunteers May Not:

  • Arrive under the influence of any substance that impairs their ability to function safely and responsibly
  • Use, share, or possess drugs or alcohol while volunteering
  • Perform duties while impaired in any way

Forbidden substances include, but are not limited to:

  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco products
  • Vape or e-cigarette products
  • Marijuana (in any form)
  • All legal or illegal mind-altering and/or controlled substances
  • Prescription medications that may impair physical or mental performance

Volunteers who violate this policy will be immediately dismissed from the program and permanently prohibited from returning. No exceptions will be made. In addition, any appropriate parties, such as case managers, parents or guardians, or referring organizations, will be notified of the violation.
